Classic Narrative Poetry
The Lion and Albert - Marriott Edgar
In this unit we will be learning about classic narrative poetry - what makes a poem classic, and how a poem can also tell a story.
The focus of our learning will be The Lion and Albert by Marriott Edgar - a classic, humorous poem featuring unforgettable characters.
We will be learning about accent and dialect, and how writers can use a "location-specific" voice for comic effect.
Our writing will include: writing in character, diaries, a newspaper report, comic strip, and letter of complaint.
Children will be learning creatively using drama techniques, annotation of text and the use of images/imagery.
Development and enrichment of vocabulary will be a key objective of this unit of learning - learning will focus on the difference between formal and informal language, and the development of formal language for writing.
The unit outcome will be a non-fiction text linked to the events in the poem.
