Autumn 1 Spellings

On this page you will find the spelling rules we will be learning each week and the words for life we will learn across the term. Each week there are spellings you can practice at home. These spellings are split into words that follow the rule we are learning and words for life. 

Week 1 - alternative graphemes for the /ee/ sound

The /ee/ sound can also be spelled ea, y, ey, e-e or e. 

There is no specific rule to help children learn which grapheme to use the more exposed they are to these words, the easier it is for them to remember which to use. 

Week 2 - alternative graphemes for the /oo/ sound and the /y(oo)/ sound

The /oo/ sound can be spelled oo ui u ew ue u-e   

The /y(oo)/ sound can be spelled u ew ue u-e   

Week 3 - alternative graphemes for the /ai/ sound

The /ai/ sound can be spelled ai ay a-e a ey eigh ea  

Week 4 - alternative graphemes for the /igh/ sound
