Stories with a Flashback

Carrie's War by Nina Bawden

In this unit, we are learning about creating a flashback - a story within a story.

We will use the opening of Carrie's War to look at the author's use of language and how a flashback can help to develop the setting and characters in a story.

In addtition we will read The Sea Chest by Toni Buzzeo.

We will also learn about the Titantic and her passengers and survivors

We will write in role, for example a letter from one character to another.

The outcome of the unit will be a story about a Titanic survivor told in flashback.

All writing builds on previous learning - for example, relative clauses, using semicolons in long list descriptions, using blended dialogue. 

The new writing skills that we will develop are - how to use direct and reported speech to manage dialogue, and how to use semicolons in complex sentences.
