Reading

This half term, to help us prepare for the upcoming SATs in years five and six, we will be reading a range of poetry and non-fiction and developing comprehension skills.

Everyone will learn and perform poems to prepare for our poetry recital in the second half of spring term.

Children will read, understand, interpret and present a range of poems with different styles and themes.

Learning poetry to recite aloud is a key objective of the national curriculum.

Pupils should be taught to:

  • maintain positive attitudes to reading and understanding of what they read by:
    • learning a wider range of poetry by heart
    • preparing poems and plays to read aloud and to perform, showing understanding through intonation, tone and volume so that the meaning is clear to an audience
