Autumn 2 Spellings

On this page you will find the spelling rules we will be learning each week and the words for life we will learn across the term. Each week there are spellings you can practice at home. These spellings are split into words that follow the rule we are learning and words for life. 

Week 1 - alternative graphemes for the /u/ and /or/ sounds 

The /u/ sound can be spelled u oo oul 

The /or/ sound can be spelled or oor aw au al ore oar

Week 2 - alternative graphemes for the /ur/ and /air/ sound 

The /ur/ sound can be spelled ur ir er

The /air/ sound can be spelled air ear are 

Week 3 - suffixes and endings

For this term we will add the suffix -ly and the endings -ing, -ed, -er and -est where no change is needed to the root word. Later in the year we will learn about when and how to change the root word. 

Week 4 - words with contracted forms 

An apostrophe is placed where letters have been omitted from words. 

 

would not --> wouldn't 

Week 5 - homophones and the silent letter /k/

Homophones are words that sound the same but are spelled differently and have different meanings 

 

new | knew 

Week 6 - adding the ending 'es' 

When you add -es to nouns and verbs ending in the letter 'y' the rule is you drop the 'y' and add an 'i' before adding 'es'

 

baby --> babies

copy --> copies
