Magical Mapping 

Children will learn about: 

• To know that maps are made using symbols to fit on the necessary detail
• To know north, south, east and west
• To know the UK consists of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
• To know that you can use an atlas to identify countries
• To know there are 5 oceans in the world: Pacific, Atlantic, Southern, Arctic and Indian
• To know there are 7 continents in the world: Asia, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, Africa and Australia (Australasia)

Children will develop the skills of: 

• To create their own simple maps and symbols of the school and immediate surrounding area (field, pond, MUGA, maze etc.)
• To use simple compass directions as well as locational and directional language when describing features and routes
• To use an atlas to identify the UK and it’s countries
• To use an atlas to locate places around the world
• To use aerial photos to identify features and places as well as to follow routes
• To describe places and features using simple geographical vocabulary
