- talk about different stories with different themes and know what the themes are
- understand how authors use words to make stories funny, scary or real
- find information in non-fiction texts and decide if it is useful or not
- choose their own books and know what they like
- talk about books and find examples in the text to support their opinions
- read words with more than one syllable
- read with increasing fluency and accuracy
- self-correct when they read something wrong
- read aloud pausing at full stops, and changing voice for exclamation, question and speech marks
- guess what might happen in the end of the story
- know about non-fiction texts and know what the text will be about
- talk about similarities and differences between books
- skim quickly over texts to get an idea of what they are about
- find words and phrases in books and explain what they mean
- work out what an author means even if they haven't written it down
