What can a Year 2 reader do?

A year 2 reader can...

  • talk about different stories with different themes and know what the themes are
  • understand how authors use words to make stories funny, scary or real
  • find information in non-fiction texts and decide if it is useful or not
  • choose their own books and know what they like 
  • talk about books and find examples in the text to support their opinions 
  • read words with more than one syllable 
  • read with increasing fluency and accuracy 
  • self-correct when they read something wrong
  • read aloud pausing at full stops, and changing voice for exclamation, question and speech marks 
  • guess what might happen in the end of the story 
  • know about non-fiction texts and know what the text will be about 
  • talk about similarities and differences between books 
  • skim quickly over texts to get an idea of what they are about 
  • find words and phrases in books and explain what they mean 
  • work out what an author means even if they haven't written it down
