Spring 2
Spring 2
On this page you will find the spelling rules we will be learning each week and the words for life we will learn across the term. Each week there are spellings you can practice at home. These spellings are split into words that follow the rule we are learning and words for life.
Week 1 - suffixes -ful and -less
The suffix -ful means full or a lot of.
The suffix -less means without. It is is the opposite of -ful.
When you add the suffix -ful or -less to most root words that end in a consonant, no change is needed to the root word.
When the root word ends in -y, you drop the y and add an i before adding the suffix -ful or -less.
Week 2 - adding the endings -ing and -ed to words ending in e
When the root word ends in e, you drop the e and add -ing or -ed.
hike > hiking
hike > hiked
Week 3 - adding the endings -er and -est to words ending in e
When a words ends in e, drop the e and add -er or -est.
nice > nicer
nice > nicest
Week 4 - apostrophe for possession (singular)
To show one things belongs to another, we use an apostrophe and an s. If the word ends in s, simply add the apostrophe.
Isobel's writing is neat.
James' reading is good.
The dog's bowl is clean.
Week 5 - /l/ sound -el -il -al -le
There is no rule for which ending to use, the more children are exposed to the words the easier it is for them to recognise the correct spelling.
The most common ending is the -le ending we learned in Spring 1.
Week 6 - the silent letter w and homophones
There is no rule for the silent w in words. The more children are exposed to words with the silent w, the more accurate they will become in spelling them.
Homophones are words that sound the same but are spelled differently and have different meanings.
